West Surrey Racing celebrated their double title success in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship with yet more silverware at the annual BMW Sports Trophy Awards in Munich, Germany on Friday night (December 9).
The Sunbury-on-Thames-based team claimed second place in the BMW Sports Team Trophy after winning the teams’ and constructors’ titles in the BTCC this season with the BMW 125i M Sport, while drivers Sam Tordoff, Rob Collard and Jack Goff during 2016 were also recognised.
Established in 1962, The BMW Sports Trophy is awarded annually to the world’s best-performing non-works BMW driver. The Team Trophy was added in 2013.
Sam, runner-up in the BTCC drivers’ championship this year with two wins and nine podium finishes, came 11th in the global driver rankings.
Rob, whose two BTCC victories brought him fifth place in the points, placed 13th, while Jack was ranked 22nd after a season in which he took two podiums and a season-high four fastest laps.
All three were presented with their awards by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. The Team Trophy was accepted by WSR Directors Mike Ewan and David Eggleton.
The Munich celebrations were a perfect way to mark the end of WSR’s 10th season of racing with BMW machinery.
With the 320si and the 125i M sport, WSR have taken 14 BTCC titles as well as 123 outright and independent class wins and 335 podiums in both British and World Touring Car competition and the BMW Sports Trophy with Colin Turkington in 2007 and ’09.
Mike Ewan, Director, said: “The BMW Sports Trophy is a global competition between the world’s very best privateer BMW teams. It’s incredibly tough to win, so to be ranked second is a great testament to the truly exceptional performance by everyone at WSR during 2016 and gives us great confidence heading into the 2017 season. BMW is a fantastic manufacturer to be involved with and recognition like this shows how seriously they take competition and the teams that represent them on the track.”
